Sid Meier’s Civilization VI features a new artistic direction that aims to represent the age of exploration.

The stylised design makes the latest edition in the Civilisation franchise much brighter and more visually distinct from previous games. The new approach has not been universally acclaimed – although here in the Thumbsticks dungeon we’re rather fond of its bold inked lines.

In First Look: The Art of Civilization VI, Kindafunny’s Greg Miller speaks to the Fireaxis team – including art director Brian Busatti and lead designer Ed Beach – about the development of the game’s new visual style.

Ed Beach, lead designer at Fireaxis says:

“With the age of exploration theme in particular we knew we were going to make the map more important with the game, and what better way to bring that out than to just have the art-style reflect it, because the coolest maps in the world are those early maps where there were sea dragons on the edge of it. As soon as we hit on that theme of the art-style we said, why did it take us six Civilizations to come up with that?”

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI  is due for release on 21st October, 2016. You can see more First Look videos over a the Civilization YouTube channel.
