Red Faction, the classic PlayStation 2 shooter from 2001, is now available on PlayStation 4.

Released to wide acclaim Red Faction was notable for its “GeoMod” engine that let players blast holes in the environment, as well as in enemies. It was a remarkable achievement at the time and the level of destruction it offered is something we still don’t see very often in modern games.

The original Red Faction was developed by Volition, who went on to create the Saint’s Row series and are currently at work on Agents of Mayhem. It was followed by three sequels, the pick of the bunch being Red Faction: Guerrilla on PlayStation 3.

The reissue comes via THQ Nordic – the new name for Nordic Games – who acquired the the rights to many old THQ properties in 2013, including Darksiders and MX vs. ATV. It will be interesting to see if this release is just a one-off or a litmus test for a potential new entry in the franchise. The new edition features an upscaled resolution and PlayStation Trophy support.

Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic, said:

“Playing Red Faction for the first time is one of my favorite memories on PlayStation 2. The team at THQ Nordic is thrilled to be able to share that experience with a whole new generation of players on PlayStation 4. Ripping a hole through the surface of Mars to access a hidden tunnel for a surprise takedown is about as satisfying as a shooter can get!”

Red Faction is available to download now from the US PlayStation Store, priced $14.99. At the time of writing the game was not available in the UK store. We’ll update this page as and when this changes.
