Stoic release a free new combat mode for The Banner Saga 2.

Called Survival Mode, the free update consists of 40 turn-based, back to back combat levels.

Players are tasked with assembling a team from a range of existing Banner Saga heroes, and each victory is rewarded with Renown, the game’s currency. This comes in handy as Survival Mode features a perma-death mechanic. Once your team members are dead, they’re dead, and using earned Renown is the only way to unlock more heroes to take to the field.

Despite being turn-based the new mode is fast-paced, with a 30 second timer keeping the action moving.

John Watson, Technical Director at Stoic said:

“Survival Mode is something we’ve been working on behind the scenes for a while now. This is an entirely new experience within Banner Saga 2. Our goal was to create a fun, tactical game mode where fans can play from a different perspective which focuses on strategy and the hard cost of death in combat. We modified how the combat worked from the core game based on feedback from our community and put it through a closed beta to make sure that it was fun.”

Survival Mode is available to download right now for The Banner Saga 2 owners on PC and Mac. You can buy the game itself from the usual online retailers and at the Banner Saga website.
