Blizzard keep the cat out of the bag and confirm Overwatch launch date and open beta.

We all kind of knew but Blizzard have formally set 24th May as the launch date for their forthcoming team-based FPS, Overwatch. The game will be released simultaneously on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Pre-orders will get you early access on the beta running from May 3–4. Sensible, patient people who realise that there’s no need to ever pre-order a game will be able to join the beta for free during the all-access period that runs from May 5–9.*

New features have been introduced to the game since its last public outing at last year’s BlizzCon. These include a new map type, Control, in which reams teams battle to capture and hold objectives, plus Quick Play and Play Vs. AI modes. A new progression system also rewards players with Loot Boxes containing an expansive range of cosmetic items to personalize their character.

If you were curious about what Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard has to say about the game, you’re in luck:

Overwatch is a team shooter for everyone, with deep, cooperative gameplay, fast and fun competitive action, and a diverse range of larger-than-life heroes. We think PC and console players everywhere will have a great time in the game, and we’re excited to give everyone a chance to try Overwatch out for themselves ahead of its May 24 launch.”

And we have to say, we’re excited too. It all looks rather marvellous.

[small]*I’m absolutely aware that my pre-order history includes everything from amiibo figures to a copy of Captain Toad. This doesn’t make it right. But that said…[/small]
