With a new Nintendo Indies Direct just around the corner, one of the event’s previous announcements is back in the news.
Sports Story, the sequel to the brilliant Golf Story, was announced at the Nintendo Indies Direct presentation in December 2019. It promised more of Golf Story’s shenanigans, a game that mashes Mario Golf: Advance Tour (AKA the best golf game) with the quirky RPG heart of Earthbound or classic Pokémon.
We were thoroughly looking forward to it, but sadly, Sports Story has been delayed. It was originally tabled for 2020, but there’s no new release window at the moment. Don’t expect to see more of it at the next Nintendo Indies Direct, then.
Why has Sports Story been delayed? Developer Sidebar Games took to Twitter to explain:
The game has become rather ambitious and we are excited about how it could turn out. But the price is currently being paid as we try to make our plans into reality. We are eager to reveal the results of these past 2 years so please look forward to future updates.

It’s a familiar story. “The game has become rather ambitious and we are excited about how it could turn out,” the statement reads, and the developer wants to “take some more time to work on Sports Story and ensure that everything makes it into the game.”
Or if you want to hear it from the cast of Sports Story themselves:

And it’s no bad thing, honestly. We do understand. Games take a long time to make. It’s really hard! So take as long as you need on Sports Story, Sidebar Games, because we’re still excited.
