Dark Light

A classic Nobuo Uematsu track is the first in a new series highlighting our favourite compositions from the greatest video game soundtracks of all time.

We’ll be picking music from all eras and genres, and over time we’ll complete a 100 track playlist that will provide the perfect music for any video game pool party.

The tracks we select are in no particular order and we’ll only be picking one piece from each game. Here’s the first:

Track: Neverending Journey
Game: Lost Odyssey
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Year: 2007

Our first track is Neverending Journey by Nobuo Uematsu, a composer who will no doubt be making more than one appearance on this playlist.

Lost Odyssey is a somewhat overlooked RPG from 2007 that was an exclusive Xbox 360 release. The game was part Microsoft’s strategy to build its audience in Japan and although the plan was ultimately unsuccessful it did lead to the creation of Lost Odyssey and Mistwalkers’ Blue Dragon – both of which deserve reappraisal.

Securing the talents of Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu was a big coup and the resulting soundtrack is full of gems including A Return, Indeed… and Epsylon Range. For this list, however, we’ve picked Neverending Journey for its mournful melody and, well, that guitar break.

If you think we chose the wrong track, let us know in the comments below.
