Unity engine support on the way for the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL.
Back at GDC Unity CEO John Riccitiello talked of his desire to democratise the creation of video games.
That lofty ambition took another step forward last week when Unity Technologies revealed plans for the Unity engine to support the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL.
The announcement came at Unite 2015 in Tokyo and opens up Nintendo’s system to 4 million registered Unity developers.
At the very least the Nintendo 3DS should see some parity with Unity built games released on other platforms. However, it also opens up the tantalising possibility of developers using the system’s dual screen and 3D features to create exclusive 3DS titles in much greater numbers. It also means there is another common development framework between the 3DS and Wii U.
The New 3DS and New 3DS XL were released in Japan last year and in the west in Februrary. Both systems combined have so far sold over 2 million units worldwide.
Unity 5 was unveiled at GDC 2015 and is available to download right now at very reasonable $0 for a personal licence. Go make a game.
We have a favour to ask
Thumbsticks has a couple of main aims. We want to write interesting articles and cover games that most outlets won't, and we want to give opportunities to new writers and new voices. And right now, with the current state of online publishing? It's tough! We hate to ask, but if you want us to continue writing what others won't, or to keep covering weird indie games, or to be able to give opportunities to new writers – and only if you can afford it – then please consider supporting us on Patreon.
