Dark Light

Bad news if you own Sony’s console and like turn-of-the-last century animation – there won’t be a Cuphead PS4 version. Sorry.

Cuphead is one of those things that really captures the imagination, the second you see it. Like Tunic (née Secret Legend), which is a lot like The Legend of Zelda, or The Swords of Ditto, which is quite similar to Square Enix’s Mana series, or Ooblets, which is like Pokémon meets Animal Crossing… you instantly get the flavour that Cuphead is like a vintage run and gun platformer, with an even-more-vintage Steamboat Willie makeover.

Cuphead is a very nice thing indeed.

Unfortunately, the world of video games is such that we don’t all get nice things. And in a rare case of Sony’s console doing worse for exclusives in recent years, it has been confirmed that Cuphead will only come out on Xbox One and Windows PC. That’s right: there won’t be a Cuphead PS4 release.

It wasn’t entirely clear. It looked like an Xbox One console exclusive, but there was always a little glimmer of hope that one day, some day, there might be a Cuphead PS4 version.

But those hopes have been quashed on NeoGAF, when user Double Jump asked the question as directly and forthrightly as they could.

GAF user Teeth – who Eurogamer confirmed is actually Tyler Moldenhauer, digital painter and QA at StudioMDHR, the developer of Cuphead – took a moment to explain:

“Yes, this Cuphead game is exclusive to Xbox and PC (with Steam and Win10 versions at launch and a GOG release likely shortly after). There will likely be a Mac version down the road and possibly a Linux version beyond that (unless we lose our houses or whatever). We own the Cuphead IP.”

So that’s that, then. Don’t expect to see Cuphead on PS4. Ever.

(But it will release for Xbox One and Windows PC on September 29, 2017.)
