Dark Light

Sony has unveiled the Limited Edition PlayStation F.C. Dualshock 4 controller. We wish they hadn’t.

Getting a special edition controller to look good is a fine art. Most gaming peripherals are designed to look smart in black or dark grey, not stand out, and get the job done. Sticking badges, and random patterns on every available surface often results in something that looks cheap and tacky. The new limited edition PlayStation F.C. Dualshock 4 is a fine example of how not to do it. The recent Xbox One controller variations are not too hot, either.

This vibrant blue Dualshock 4 will hit stores in Europe – but not in the UK, strangely – on September 29th, the same day as EA’s FIFA 18. Its release also ties in with this season’s PlayStation 4 sponsored Champions League tournament.

It’s not so much the colour that’s the problem, more the incredibly poor illustrations. In particular, the penalty area markings on the touchpad, and PlayStation F.C crest are completely hideous.

Take a closer look.

It reminds me of the t-shirts my gran would buy me when I was 8 – usually emblazoned with nonsense like Soccer FC, or Striker Utd – when all I wanted was an authentic West Ham Utd kit.

You can order the PlayStation F.C. Dualshock 4 via the Sony store, where there’s a selection of much nicer limited edition controllers to choose from .
