Pokémon Go gets revamped gyms and Raid Battle cooperative group gameplay.

Niantic and The Pokémon Company have revealed a number of game-changing updates for the popular mobile game, Pokémon Go. Starting today, revamped gyms will begin rolling out to players, while a future update will introduce a new co-op group gameplay feature called Raid Battles.

The gym upgrades are intended to make ownership more collaborative, and encourage players to visit friendly gyms and engage with them in new ways. The new gyms will feature PokéStop-like photo spinners that will distribute unique items. Trainers will also receive Gym Badges which can be levelled up to earn rewards and bonus items.

Raid Battles will be added to the game in the coming weeks. The new battles let trainers team up with other nearby players, and work together in defeating powerful Pokémon known as Raid Bosses. Raid Battles are timed in-game events that will temporarily take over a gym. Friends can also create Private Raid groups via a code system that allows trainers to invite their friends to a specific raid group. Yay, friend codes!

You can get the nitty-gritty on all the new features – including new six-slot gym battle system – over at the official Pokémon Go website.

Niantic and The Pokémon Company have also revealed details on a number of real life and in-game events to celebrate Pokémon Go’s first anniversary.
