Nintendo confirm that Qbby's last adventure, BYE-BYE BOXBOY!, will be released on March 23, 2017. We knew this day would come but that doesn't make it any less upsetting. Nintendo's best new character, Qbby, will be making his final appearance at the end of March with the release of BYE-BYE BOXBOY! Qbby leapt into our hearts in 2015's BOXBOY, a remarkably inventive, yet very simple, puzzle platform game that drew comparisons with the likes Valve's masterpiece, Portal. Last year HAL Laboratory released the sequel, BOXBOXBOY! which added more bells and whistles, without diluting the core mechanics that make the series so special. BYE-BYE BOXBOY! appears to be Qbby's grandest adventure yet, with 180 levels and four new planets to explore. The game also introduces the Qbabies, small cube like creature in need of Qbby's help. The game is the first in the series to feature Amiibo compatibility. Players can use Kirby Collection Amiibo figures to unlock Kirby, Meta Knight, Waddle Dee and King Dedede costumes. There's no news on whether the adorable Qbby Amiibo, released in Japan last year, will make it to the West. Players with game data from the first two BOX BOY titles can unlock both a Qucy costume plus the option to play the game using dot-matrix graphics that recalls the screen display of the original Game Boy. A demo for BYE-BYE BOXBOY! is also released on the Nintendo eShop today that features a sample of levels from all three games. We don't imagine that we've seen the last of Qbby. A Switch version compiling all three titles seems a certainty. Failing that, we'll settle for a BOXBOY RISES return in a few years. BYE-BYE BOXBOY! will be released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop on March 23, priced £4.49/€4.99. Want to get in on the eShop action? Pick up a Nintendo 3DS from Amazon now.
