“…did I just say the first The Last Of Us game?”

To a certain extent, it’s easier to quit while you’re ahead.

This is a truism known well by the legends of British comedy. Just look at Fawlty Towers – going out on a high after two short seasons – or the UK original version of The Office that also ran for two seasons, then abruptly ended before the audience got a chance to grow tired of it.

Now compare this with its tedious American spin-off that ran for nine repetitive seasons, with even its star Steve Carrell saying ‘enough is enough’ after the seventh, before finally getting taken out into the woods behind NBC’s house and given a merciful farewell in 2013.

The old adage ‘always leave them wanting more’ seems like a good idea when you put it like that, doesn’t it? But sometimes a story captures the audience’s imagination so strongly, that in spite of the fear of just how difficult a second album it might be, people will want more all the same.

At the very top of the list for most gamers then, is The Last Of Us 2.

The Last Of Us 2 concept art

Ever since the above image surfaced on the Facebook profile of Marek Okon, a talented concept artist who worked on key promotional images for The Last Of Us, people got a bit excited. Then Naughty Dog ploughed ahead with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Okon, literally minutes after whipping fans into a frenzy with his image of an older Ellie, dashed hopes with the following statement:

Lol. This is how you know you are teasing your stuff the right way. So before its gonna get blown out of proportions – its gonna be strictly personal image. Is it about TLOU2? Not really… Maybe… Its classified ;P But seriously its gonna be just a fan art ;]

So, that’s spoiled the spoiler.

Until now.

The Last Of Us 2 confirmed?

In a similarly nonchalant and accidental fashion, a few of members of the Naughty Dog team themselves appear to have accidentally confirmed The Last Of Us 2. During a live stream of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collectionsoon to be released on October 7, 2015 – Naughty Dog Community Strategist Eric Monacelli and Lead Cinematics Animators Josh Scherr and Eric Baldwin dropped the bombshell.

We’re not sure which of the three said it, but here’s the transcript as best we can make it out:

…and he was the one in charge of face animation for the 3 Uncharted games and the first The Last Of Us game… did I just say the first The Last Of Us game?

Just in case you missed the significance of that – which we’re sure you didn’t – the mention of The Last Of Us being ‘the first’ game in the series seems to fairly strongly confirm that The Last Of Us 2 is coming.

Could it be a simple slip of the tongue? Perhaps. Could it be a calculated leak to start imaginations racing? A distinct possibility. But either way, it looks like The Last Of Us 2 is coming.

Not that we know when, or anything, but still – It’s The Last Of Us 2!

Valve will be announcing Half-Life 3 next…
