You have to assume that, after all this time, the Pokémon Company will have been running low on ideas, particularly for new starter Pokémon. Roll on 2016, and the new starter Pokémon for Pokémon Sun and Moon have been announced as Rowlet, Litten and Popplio* – essentially an owl, a cat, and a sea lion – which got us wondering where those ideas could possibly have come from.

Could it be that they’ve ‘borrowed’ the ideas for those new starter Pokémon from the classic children’s nonsense poem by Edward Lear?

The owl and the pussy-cat went to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat.

Owl. Cat. Sea (lion). And Owlet is even wearing a beautiful pea-green bow tie.

We rest our case.

Pokémon Sun and Moon releases on November 23, 2016. You can pre-order it from Amazon, but The Owl and the Pussy-Cat is available to buy right now

*Popplio (the sea lion) is patently terrible, and will clearly be this generation’s Bulbasaur. Owlet and Litten are way cooler, and come with the added bonus of not looking like some sort of nightmarish clown-and-sea-lion gene-splicing experiment gone awry.
