Dark Light

Roll up, roll up. Our fingers ache but there’s one more press conference to cover today. It’s time for Sony’s E3 media briefing.

We’ll be reporting on each announcement as it happens.

Sony E3 2016 media briefing report

19:18 – Show ends.

Well, it’s safe to say that was a pretty damned good press conference.

The new God of WarSpider-Man and Kojima reveals stole the show for me. And a release date for The Last Guardian, too.

Job done, Sony.

19:17 – But…

Let’s spare a thought for the poor, dear departed PS Vita.

RIP little chum.

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

19:16 – And now time for a sizzle-reel.

And why not? The PlayStation 4 is one hot sausage right now.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J80HEJ1o3_I” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

19:09 – Days Gone gameplay demo.

This game is another good looker. I’m not sure the PS4 needs an upgrade based on some of the visuals we’ve seen tonight.

We see some rabid golem-like zombies.

Oh, now there are tonnes of them. 28 Days Later style infected? It’s no Dead Rising, that’s for sure.

Impressive animation as we see our capped protagonist try to escape from a swarm of zombie things. There’s lots happening on-screen as they keep coming. Echoes of the World War Z movie too.

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

19:06 – A new Spider-Man game.

Wow. This looks phenomenal. It’s from Insomniac, which makes sooooo much sense. Can’t wait to watch that again trailer on slow-mo!

Hashtag is #spidermanPS4 – an exclusive then?

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3R2uvJqWeVg” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

19:03 – Kojima’s new game is.…

Death Stranding.

Trailer shows dead crabs on the ground. And, erm, a child connected by an umbilical cord to…Norman Reedus.

Well, this is something.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcaMw4aCz4c” autoplay=”no”]

It’s so very Kojima, that’s what it is. A very impressive reveal trailer.

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

19:00 – Andrew House is in the house (sorry).

And he welcomes Hideo Kojima to the stage. And the place goes mad.

“I’m back!” he says.

The audience screams. He’s such a fucking showman. You have to love him.

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:58 – LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Another kid friendly game, and one I really liked when I played it during GDC week.

The bricks are strong with this one…

Sorry, I’’ll get my cloak.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOL5cKOkST4″ autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:56 – Crash Bandicoot is back!

Three remastered games coming to PlayStation 4: CrashCrash 2, and Crash Warped.

And he’s in Skylanders Imaginators too.

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:47 – Another space game?

Not sure what this is. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, I think.

Yup. Space fight and combat looks pretty cool. Once out of the ship… it’s definitely a Call of Duty game.

To be honest, I can’t see why this game is getting all the hate. Looks fun to me. But then, I always liked Moonraker best.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmaZw1xMxBQ” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:45 – And now, Final Fantasy VR.

Looks like a combat game where you fight monsters from Final Fantasy XV.

We are seeing trend here to create VR spin-offs that complement larger titles. A nice way to kick off Sony’s VR endeavours. Bite-sized experiences – we assume – of known properties.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otVk3EEjgd8″ autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:43 – STAR WARS!

It’s Star Wars Battlefront X-Wing VR Mission. Looks pretty tidy – a cool trailer that will make a thousand fanboys weep. Sniff.

And there’s also a tease for Batman Arkham VR.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwdZvJfxqtE” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:42 – Farpoint.

Here’s another new VR title. And one that looks interesting. Set on a dusty planet. Drones in the sky. Giant spider crab monsters. I’ll take that. It’s The Martian vs. Starship Troopers.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c18R6Sb97nM” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:40 – Time for more VR.

PlayStation VR comes to the US on 13th October. 50 games available between launch and the end of 2016.

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:35 – Before Kitchen?

A new VR experience. A horror game. I’m crapping myself already as we explore a spooky house.

It’s Resident Evil VII! Coming on 24th January 2017.

Looks very, very creepy. Good luck to those of you with the stomach to play this. The whole game is compatible with PlayStation VR.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_Hbr9ITvc0″ autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:30 – And now for something new?

It’s Detroit: Become Human, from David Cage’s Quantic Dream.

Echoes of Blade Runner and A.I. here. Looks to be a detective game, which is pretty interesting. Choice based narrative, of course, as we see a scene play out in different ways.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD1pbWCJcKQ” autoplay=”no”]

Is Daniel, the new Jaaaaason?

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:23 – Horizon Zero Dawn.

Wow, what a start to the media briefing. The games keep coming and we have no time to be sarcastic.

Here’s a new gameplay demo for Horizon Zero Dawn. The game has such a lush tone. It’s familiar, yet alien. Feels like a true wilderness. And the creature design is very cool too, genuinely alien. And their sound design is pretty disturbing.

The giant creatures are majestic. High hopes for this one, it’s a really impressive demo.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Xx3MdqdgM” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:21 – New trailer for The Last Guardian.

Still looks good. And it gets a release date at last, 25th October. That’s the 25th October this year.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL2zzgW6YOo” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:18 – Days Gone.

A mournful trailer looks back to “when the world went dark”.

A new apocalyptic game from Bend Studios, Days Gone. No details on what caused the collapse of humanity from the trailer though.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n95IaELdWDU” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:16 – God of War soundtrack is confirmed to be composed by Bear McCreary.

Which is a very good thing. And here’s a gameplay trailer.

[youtube url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ_GCPaKywg” autoplay=”no”] [divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:10 – More God of War.

There’s a tremendous fight on a beach. Kratos’s son joining in to help defeat a big bloody troll creature.

They then take things a little easier by shooting a deer from distance with a bow and arrow. Kratos Jnr. knifes the poor beast to put an end to its misery.

The game is simply called: God of War. And it looks amazing.

Welcome to Sony’s E3 Media Briefing.

[divider style=”dashed” align=”center” color=”gray” opacity=”1.00″ width=”” pull=”” padding_top=”10px” padding_bottom=”10px”]

18:01 – Cue the music.

It’s Bear McCreary. We loved his Battlestar Galactica music.

This is how you start a press conference. An utterly captivating orchestral performance.

And it’s for a new God of War. Looks open-world, or open-ish at least. It also looks like a complete reinvention. No longer top down, now a standard third-person view-point and cinematic camera movements. Combat looks visceral. And the game looks beautiful.
