The Super Mario Bros. movie has been delayed into 2023. If they tried really hard, maybe they could delay it even more?
Remember that old Shigeru Miyamoto quote about delaying video games?
“A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.”
Do you think the same is true of video game movies?
Probably not, based on the genre’s history. But Miyamoto-san will be wondering, having announced via the Nintendo of America Twitter account that the Super Mario Bros. movie – in development by Nintendo and Illumination – will be delayed.
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

The Super Mario Bros. movie was originally slated for Christmas 2022. Now we’ll get to experience it in Spring 2023; specifically April 7 in North America and April 28 in Japan. Other worldwide release dates have not been provided, but expect them to be on or around the North American release. (Presumably, the Japanese release will be later due to localisation.)
Only time will tell whether a Super Mario Bros. movie from Chris Meledandri (the producer of Minions) is in the interest of humanity, however.
Probably not.
