Frostpunk, which casts you as the cold and calculating ruler of the apoclayptic tundra, is free on PC.
Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. *flips coin* This week it’s ice.
Frostpunk, the Epic Games Store freebie until next Thursday, is all about survival in the face of a cold, unrelenting wilderness. Developed by 11 bit Studios, this 2018 city-builder elects players as the ruler of the last city on a frozen earth. Heat is your most precious resource, which means managing a city structured around a massive steam-powered furnace.
The game has tons of gut-wrenching decisions. And, after the past year-and-a-half, we probably all feel like we have a good handle on what not to do in the face of a public health crisis.
Can’t get enough of deciding the fates of people in trying circumstances? You might want to check out 11 bit Studios’ previous game, This War of Mine. The 2014 side-scrolling survival game tackles another kind of devastation, following a group of civilians in a fictional war-torn country.
If all of this sounds a little dreary, keep your eyes on the Epic Games Store next week. Lately, Epic has been shrowding upcoming free games in mystery, and this week isn’t any different. We don’t know what next Thursday will bring, but it can’t be darker than Frostpunk, right? Right?
