The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask Nintendo Switch release confirmed

Dark Light

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is the latest N64 classic to get a release through Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo has received some deserved criticism this week following the decision to shutter the 3DS and Wii U eShops. The move shines once again shines a light on the thorny issues of game preservation, access, and digital ownership.

Nintendo’s current solution to such matters is a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. It’s not ideal – and far from permanent – but it does provide access to a (slowly) growing library of games from the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and Nintendo 64.

The latest Nintendo 64 title to join the catalogue is The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. The 2000 classic is the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and reuses many of the same characters and assets. However, it tells a much darker tale and adds a brain-bending time travel mechanic that delights and infuriates players in equal measure.

The game will be released through Nintendo Switch Online on February 24, 2022.

The Nintendo 3DS remake (get it while you still can) is probably the definitive version of the game, but some purists dislike the changes made by Nintendo to make it more accessible.

Regardless of how you play it, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is a memorable and influential adventure that, even in its trickier Nintendo 64 form, will hopefully find a new audience of fans.
