Dark Light

This week’s Xbox Free Play Days lineup includes one of the best games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise and a surprisingly decent sports simulation.

Maybe it’s because I’m from the land of cream tea and cricket matches, but I never really engaged with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s simulacrum of the British Isles. One too many countryside hikes – and far too many rainy days – make it feel less like an escape and more like a school holiday.

The Ancient Greece of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey offers a far more pleasing environment to explore, along with better mission design and more engaging characters. If you don’t believe me – and you’re an Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member – you can now play the game for free on console.

One of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey‘s most enjoyable storylines takes place at the Olympic Games. Amusingly, this week’s second freebie is the official game of the 2020 Olympic Games, which was, of course, held earlier this year. Sega’s game is a decent effort, fun in multiplayer, and much more than a simple button-masher.

Both titles are free to play until midnight on Sunday, and there are some generous discounts available if you want your own copy. And don’t worry, all progress and achievements earned will carry over.
