Dark Light

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie Sonic the Hedgehog now looks like Sonic the Hedgehog.

Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the long-gestating Sonic the Hedgehog movie. That trailer, which destroyed the internet, featured a disturbingly realistic design for the titular Blue Blur. That Sonic had tiny white hands, a weirdly lanky build and, the worst offender, big human teeth.

The online reaction was so universally negative that Paramount delayed the movie from its initial Nov. 8 release date. Director Jeff Fowler took to Twitter back in May, vowing to fix Sonic’s design.

Well, the fix is here. A second trailer, released this morning, shows off Sonic’s new look. It’s undoubtedly better. The world’s fastest hedgehog now boasts bigger eyes, a more rounded face and a shorter stature. Basically, if you’ve played a Sonic game since 1998’s Sonic Adventure, this Sonic will look awfully familiar.

Whether the movie will be any good remains to be seen. It generally seems fine, and if it can hit that standard it will be significantly better than 95 percent of video game movies. We’ll know for sure when Sonic the Hedgehog hits theaters on Feb. 14, 2020. That’s right, Sonic the Hedgehog wants to be THE date night movie to start the ’20s off with a bang.
