Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are releasing on Nintendo Switch this month

Spelunky and Spelunky 2 will be released on Nintendo Switch this month in North America, Europe, and Australia.

The phrase “perfect for Nintendo Switch’ is so overused – including by us – that’s it’s almost meaningless. That being said, Spelunky and Spelunky 2 really are perfect for Nintendo Switch.

The Spelunky games are among the best examples of procedurally generated roguelike gameplay you’ll find. Both games are deceptively simple and easy to parse but full of depth, secrets and challenge. And like the best games in the genre, both titles nail that “one more run” feeling.

We spent hundreds of hours playing the first game on PS Vita and can attest to its suitability for portable play. Naturally, we’re pleased to discover via a new trailer from developer Mossmouth that both games will be released on the Nintendo Switch eShop on August 26, 2021.

The journey to a Nintendo console has been a long one. The first game was designed by Derek Yu and released as freeware in 2008 before being remade for the Xbox 360 in 2012. The updated version then came to PS4, PS4, PS Vita, PC.

Spelunky 2 followed on PS4 and PC last year, developing the formula with new but equally addictive gameplay mechanics
