Naughty Dog have announced that Left Behind, the acclaimed single-player chapter to The Last of Us, is coming to the US PlayStation Store as a standalone download.

The download will be available on both PS3 and PS4 from 12th May, priced $9.99. Naughty Dog are positioning the standalone Left Behind as a gateway to the full The Last of Us game. A way for new players to explore the world and characters at a lower price-point.

Also included will be a two-hour trial of the Factions Multiplayer mode. The Left Behind standalone will have upgrade paths available in the in-game store for both the full Factions experience and the full The Last of Us game. The price of the PS3 Left Behind Add-on will also be reduced on the same day.

If this sounds suddenly complicated, here’s a summary of the various upgrade paths:

PlayStation 4

Full Factions Multiplayer
– $9.99

Full digital single-player game with Treacherous Territories Map Pack (if you already own the full Factions Multiplayer)
– $29.99

Full digital single-player game, Factions Multiplayer Mode, and the Treacherous Territories Map Pack bundle
– $39.99

PlayStation 3

Full Factions Multiplayer
– $9.99

Full digital single-player game with Treacherous Territories Map Pack (if you already own the full Factions Multiplayer)
– $19.99

Full digital single-player game, Factions Multiplayer Mode, and the Treacherous Territories Map Pack bundle
– $29.99

Simple, right? Or you could just buy The Last of Us right now and be done with it.
