There’s another cracker in this week’s Epic Games Store freebies

Dark Light

Fulbright’s fantastic Tacoma is one of the free games on the Epic Games Store this week. This way to the Tacoma Dome, folks.

Gone Home is one of the most formative video games of our generation. No, really. We featured it on our list of the best games of the last decade, top of the tree for 2013 – a year that also included Grand Theft Auto V, Bioshock Infinite, the Tomb Raider reboot, and The Last of Us. No big deal, then.

Which obviously puts a bit of pressure on developer Fulbright for the follow-up, Tacoma. (And we spoke to Steve Gaynor about that in 2016, during the development of Tacoma.)

You’ll no doubt be pleased to hear that Tacoma is free on the Epic Games Store for the next week. Conceptually, it shares a lot with Gone Home. But instead of a static environment to rummage through, you’re able to observe digital echoes of crewmembers of the space station Tacoma, to learn what became of them and unravel the mystery you’ve been sent to uncover. If you’re looking for something comparable, it’s the science fiction cousin of Return of the Obra Dinn, another one of our games of the decade.

The other freebie is Next Up Hero, a cutesy, hand-painted hack-and-slack dungeon crawler. We don’t know too much about this one, but anything that’s even remotely Zelda-adjacent that you can play co-operatively? That’s a win.

Tacoma and Next Up Hero are free right now on the Epic Games Store and will remain that way for the next week. (When they’ll be replaced by three more games on Jul 30, 2020.)
