Stand by your wallets, this is not a drill: the Steam Winter Sale 2019 is underway.
Seems like there are always video game sales going on. Or if there isn’t, just wait a few days and one will come around. The Nintendo eShop is having one right now, in fact!
But the deepest discounts tend to come on the Steam sales. It’s a race to the bottom, and in a market that’s already peppered with cut-price games, the discounts tend to come even steeper.
Case in point: the splendid Nintendo Switch port of The Witcher 3 is 30% off in the eShop Festive Sale. That’s a healthy discount and puts the recent (and somewhat miraculous) port down to £35. But in the Steam Winter Sale? The base game is just £7.49, with the game of the year edition coming in at £10.49. Yes, it’s worth pointing out that the PC version has been out for four years – it was our game of the year for 2015 – but it just proves that Steam is still (almost always) the cheapest place to pick up games.
It’s not all old games that are discounted, however. There are small discounts on recent releases like Sekiro and Disco Elysium, while some games from earlier in the year – like Far Cry New Dawn, The Surge 2, Resident Evil 2, and Monster Hunter World – come in at bigger discounts. Popular franchises like Fallout, Batman, Life is Strange, Civilization, and Resident Evil also receive discounts across their respective back catalogues.
Here are some of our picks from the Steam Winter Sale 2019.

We hate to ask, but...
Thumbsticks has a couple of goals. We want to write interesting articles and cover games that most outlets won't, and we want to give opportunities to new writers and new voices. And right now, with the current state of online publishing? It's tough to meet those goals! We hate to ask, but if you want us to continue writing what others won't, or to keep covering weird indie games, or to be able to give opportunities to new writers – and only if you can afford it – then please consider supporting us on Patreon.
