Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the first No.1 of the year in the latest UK physical video games chart. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 leaves the top ten.
I think we can safely assume that a lot of Nintendo Switch consoles were unwrapped on Christmas morning in the UK.
The first GfK video games chart of 2021 is topped by Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which knocks FIFA 21 down to No.2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe rises to No.3, the Switch version of Minecraft climbs to three places to No. 7, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars moves up to No.8. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe also returns to the top ten, jumping a full ten places. We’d also expect that the strong performance of Just Dance 2021 is likely Switch-related.
This family-friendly shuffle pushes Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War down one place to No. 6 and PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man Miles Morales down to No.11.
Cyberpunk 2077 also exits the top ten, slumping from eighth place to No.15, a remarkable but absolutely understandable decline for CD Projekt Red’s RPG.
Further down the chart, there are reentries for 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at No.36 and Splatoon 2 at No.38.
Here’s the full UK top ten for the week ending January 2, 2021.
