Activision has finally confirmed rumours that the next game in its long-running FPS series is Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War. Or should that be Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War? Damn you, video games.
If the announcement feels like a long time coming, that’s because it is. August is latest in the year that a COD title has been revealed for some time and it follows a drip-feed of marketing activity.
The game’s mouthful of a title was inadvertently leaked by a rogue Dorito promo last month. Crates of Cold War-era spy ephemera have also been sent to streamers and influencers, and an ARG has been in play, concluding with the discovery of a nuclear missile in the free-to-play battle royale, Call of Duty: Warzone. It all but confirms a connection between Warzone and, erm, CODBOCW.
Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War (does that read better?) is in development at Treyarch and Raven Software and will receive a full unveiling on August 26. Naturally, all signs point the reveal debuting in Warzone.
In the meantime, here’s the ‘Know Your History’ teaser trailer to enjoy. There’s no gameplay footage, but it sets up some backstory and introduces a Soviet spy, codenamed Perseus.
