Star Wars: Squadrons tops an impressive lineup of Xbox Free Play Days games.

This week’s Xbox Free Play Days titles includes a stellar sci-fi shooter, an anime fighter, and a tribute to the classic 3D platformers of yesteryear.

Top-billed is Star Wars: Squadrons, the thrilling space combat shooter from EA Motive. It’s easily one of the best games produced under EA’s stewardship of the Star Wars licence and all the better for its focused scope. Squadrons is a fun and accessible shooter, with just enough depth to make mastering its flight mechanics a satisfying experience in and of itself.

Next up is another excellent licensed game, Bandai Namco’s acclaimed Dragon Ball FighterZ. The free play weekend coincides with the release of the new Ultimate Malign Being, Super Baby DLC.

The last game on the list isn’t licenced, but it really wants to be the N64 classic, Banjo-Kazooie. Developer Playtonic makes no secret of Yooka-Laylee‘s influences, and the result is an enjoyable adventure. However – as Tom mentions in his review – it’s perhaps a little too faithful to its inspiration for its own good.

All three games are free to play on console for Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members until midnight on January 17, 2021. All achievements and progress will migrate over to purchased copies, which are currently discounted.
