The organisers of European games expo Gamescom have announced that Opening Night Live, and host Geoff Keighley, will return in 2020.
Opening Night Live debuted this year and was notable for its detailed look at Death Stranding and new game reveals for titles including Kerbal Space Program 2 and Little Nightmares II. The show wasn’t a complete hit – it was far too long for one thing – but it successfully straddled the divide between press conference and stage show. The event was watched by more than 500,000 concurrent viewers.
Gamescom and Keighley have signed a multiyear partnership that will begin with next year’s show on August 24, the day before Gamescom 2020 opens its doors. There will also be a programme of events for fans held simultaneously at the expo’s event arena.
With Keighley on board we’d be surprised if next year’s event isn’t more impressive, particularly with the hype machine ramping up for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Project Scarlett. A big event in August also eases the load on E3 to some extent, with publishers given more opportunities in the promotional spotlight.
