Mario Kart Tour, a new game in the long-running series, is being developed for mobile devices and will launch at the end of March 2019.

In a tweet, Nintendo announced, “The checkered flag has been raised and the finish line is near.”

Other than that announcement, and the name of the game, we don’t know anything else about Mario Kart Tour.

Nintendo’s willingness to embrace the mobile market has ramped up over the course of the last year or so: Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp all released to moderate success.

The idea of a Mario Kart game is surely set to reach a new high point. The idea of multiplayer being available for people to jump into on their phones with friends instantly springs to mind. The only caveat would be the controls – touchscreens aren’t ideal for some of the complex power-sliding, shell-shooting mechanics – but we will have to wait and see.

The last game in the series was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch, which released last April and helped support the console in its first year.
