SNK and Tencent have announced that a new Metal Slug game is in the works.

The game – which has the working title of Metal Slug: Code J – is in development at TiMi Studio, a subsidiary of Chinese gaming giant Tencent. The ionic run-and-gun series originally debuted in 1996 and remains synonymous with SNK’s Neo Geo arcade machines and consoles. More than 15 games – including spin-offs – have been released since, the most recent being 2016’s Metal Slug Attack.

Speaking about the franchises latest entry, SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda says:

“Metal Slug has such an amazing history of great action and gameplay, so we’re proud to bring this to mobile gamers around the world. We’re happy to work closely with such a strong developer as TiMi Studios on this latest Metal Slug title.”

TiMi Studio might not be a name you immediately recognise, but you’ve probably encountered some of the titles the studio has worked on. Mobile FPS Call of Duty: Mobile is one example, and Honor of Kings is another. TiMi is also working on the recently announced pokémoba, Pokémon Unite.

Winco Qin, general manager of TiMi J1 studio, adds:

“Our team has been focused on a faithful recreation of the game’s classic shoot’em up style, easily accessible for players that’s fun for new and existing fans of the genre.”

Oh, we forgot to mention. Metal Slug: Code J is a mobile game. Please be excited.

A release date has yet to be be confirmed, but here’s a trailer to get you excited.
