Sonic Frontiers and God of War Ragnarök headline this week’s lineup of new video game releases for the PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
Boom! The season continues with another explosion of big releases across all platforms, but will there be a Sonic boom?
Sonic Frontiers arrives following a tricky preview campaign. Worries about the game’s seemingly sparse open world persist, and the grab bag of influences doesn’t appear especially coherent. Let’s hope it exceeds expectations.
We’re in more comfortable territory with Tactics Ogre: Reborn, which gives the cult classic tactics game a modern makeover. We’d have preferred a Triangle Strategy-style 2D-HD visual treatment, but that shouldn’t affect the timeless gameplay and memorable narrative.
Retro enthusiasts should also enjoy Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, the latest compilation from Digital Eclipse. The package features more than 100 classic games – from systems including the 7800, 5200, 2600, Atari Jaguar, and Lynx – plus a wealth of interviews and archival materials.
Finally, a little game called God of War Ragnarök brings more of everything to PlayStation owners. We’ll have a review for you this week.
Other new video game releases include Cobra Kai 2: Dojos Rising, Vampire Survivors, and new content for Dying Light 2 Stay Human. The excellent Return to Monkey Island also comes to PlayStation and Xbox.
