Marvel’s Avengers and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 top next week’s lineup of new PlayStation 4 video game releases.
At the time of writing, there’s a rather short list of confirmed games coming to PS4 next week. However, a quick look tells you that the fall gaming season has truly arrived.
Before we get to the heavy hitters, don’t overlook the console edition of diesel-punk RTS, Iron Harvest. King Art’s game unashamedly follows in the footsteps of the genre’s classics, but it also has plenty of its own ideas. The game includes a sizeable single-player campaign, plus co-op and multiplayer missions. We have a feeling it could be a sleeper hit.
The week’s most anticipated new game is Marvel’s Avengers from Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix. Or is it? Considering the IP, there doesn’t appear to be a groundswell of enthusiasm for the game. Poor trade show appearances and series of lukewarm betas have so far failed to build hype. In our preview, we said Marvel’s Avengers lacks spirit and energy and feels like “yet another attempt to cash in on the live-service market.” As ever with games of this type, it will be some time before there’s a critical consensus.
We are much more excited for Vicarious Visions new version of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. The recent demo was a perfectly judged mix of the old and new, and we’re hopeful the full game pulls off the same trick.
Finally, two long-running sports franchises also return to PS4. WRC9 and NBA 2K21 both promise new features and enhancements in abundance.
We’ll update this post throughout the week as we get news of any late additions. Here are the new PS4 releases confirmed so far.

We hate to ask, but...
Thumbsticks has a couple of goals. We want to write interesting articles and cover games that most outlets won't, and we want to give opportunities to new writers and new voices. And right now, with the current state of online publishing? It's tough to meet those goals! We hate to ask, but if you want us to continue writing what others won't, or to keep covering weird indie games, or to be able to give opportunities to new writers – and only if you can afford it – then please consider supporting us on Patreon.
