Nacon and Eko Software have announced that sports simulation Rugby 22 will arrive, appropriately enough, in early 2022.

Rugby 22, the latest game in the intermittent “Rugby” franchise, will release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC in January 2022.

Eko Software – the studio behind Rugby 18 and Rugby 20 – promise significant enhancements in next year’s game. Players can look forward to improved AI, difficultly that better adapts to a player’s ability and more realistic faces due to the use of photogrammetry.

Although we haven’t played last year’s effort, we were impressed by 2018’s edition. In our review, we said it was “a solid, workmanlike first effort at what is probably the most difficult sport to translate into a playable video game.”

Speaking about the new game, Benoît Clerc, head of publishing at Nacon, says:

“Rugby 22 continues and builds upon the great work started by Eko Software on the previous two games. We want to offer rugby fans the most authentic and complete experience possible with updated gameplay that has incorporated many improvements based on player feedback on the previous titles and by including official teams and competitions never seen before in a rugby simulation.”

As with previous entries in the franchise, Rugby 22 will include a roster of official league and clubs, along with major national teams including France, Italy, Ireland, and Japan.
