Naughty Dog has confirmed that there will be a multiplayer mode in The Last of Us Part II, but it isn’t saying much about it.

In an interview with Gamespot, co-director Anthony Newman said, “Factions is coming back.” Before co-director Anthony Newman continued, “Multiplayer is coming back. We’re not going to talk details yet about what form that takes, but we can confirm there will be multiplayer.”

Factions was the multiplayer component in The Last of Us, which pitted two teams, “Hunters” and “Fireflies” against each other. Each match counts as one day, and gives players a chance to gather supplies and fuel their clan’s progress. Players lead their clan for twelve in-game weeks.

It was an interesting mode that tied into the game very neatly, and it didn’t get enough said about it when the game released. Most of the attention went to the main story – and fair enough.

It may well be that The Last of Us Part II has a new spin on Factions, but we will have to wait and see. The game doesn’t yet have a scheduled release date confirmed.

It is a PS4 exclusive.
