Sega has officially confirmed that Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will be released in June as a PlayStation 4 console exclusive.

Sega’s 60th-anniversary celebrations continue with the official announcement that Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown will be released on June 1, 2021. The game will launch worldwide as a PlayStation 4 (and PS5) digital exclusive.

Virtua Fighter 5 was first released in 2006 as an arcade title before coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 in various flavours. Ultimate Showdown updates the game with high-definition graphics, new character models, stages, and cinematic sequences. Sega says the update retains the “bone-crunching, martial arts combat of its renowned predecessor”.

The game also features new online modes, including league and tournaments and the ability to create private rooms for up to 16 players. Classic modes including Rank Match, Arcade, Training, and Offline Versus also return.

Speaking about Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, chief producer Seiji Aoki says:

“The Virtua Fighter series holds a storied place in SEGA lore. This new title was developed as part of SEGA’s 60th Anniversary project by an all-star team at AM2 and Ryu ga Gotoku Studios. I am delighted for fans to play and experience the latest entry in the series.”
