Studio Wildcard has confirmed that Ark II will be a limited-time console exclusive on Xbox Series X|S.
Ark II made its surprise debut at The Game Awards 2020 with a lengthy and – to us at least – amusing trailer. When the protagonist of a game is modelled on a famous actor, that uncanny valley seems even more uncanny, and Vin Diesel’s ‘long distance’ stare only served to distract us from the admittedly impressive dino-action on display.
The confirmation that Ark II will be an Xbox console launch exclusive makes a lot of sense given the history of the IP. As Tao Sila, global product marketing manager for Xbox, points out in the announcement:
“Ark: Survival Evolved was a console launch exclusive in the Xbox Game Preview program in December 2015, gaining valuable feedback from Xbox One players along the way before launching in August 2017. When Xbox One X launched in November 2017, it was one of the first Xbox One X Enhanced titles. Then in January 2019, Xbox Game Pass members joined the Ark community then gained access to the Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Extinction DLC. Ark: Survival Evolved is also one of the first titles to be optimized for Series X|S.”
The game takes place on a whole new world, replete with hordes of nasty dinosaurs, deadly alien fauna, and new environments to explore. Diesel stars as Santiago, a character who also has a significant role in the upcoming Ark: The Animated Series. And to further prove how wrong we are to dismiss him, he is also serving as executive producer on the game, having quite a few hours of Ark: Survival Evolved.
“I’m having a lot of fun playing Ark and also really excited to join the Studio Wildcard team to develop the story both in game and in the new animated series,” Diesel says in a press statement.
Doug Kennedy, CEO of Studio Wildcard, adds: “An immensely talented actor and producer, Vin is also an accomplished gamer who has played 1000s of hours of Ark: Survival Evolved. He understands the game intimately and is providing direct feedback to the development process.”
Hats off to the man.
Ark II is set to debut on PC and Xbox Series X|S in 2022.
