Microsoft has announced that the new Battletoads game will be released next month on Xbox One, PC, and Xbox Game Pass.

Twenty-six years after they first entertained players, Zitz, Rash and Pimple are back in a brand new Battletoads game for Xbox One and PC. The new brawler will be released on August 20 and is also included as part of Xbox Game Pass.

First teased in Microsoft’s E3 2018 Xbox Briefing, Battletoads is an all-new game developed by Dlala Studios with support from franchise creators, Rare.

According to the press release, the “Battletoads’ irreverent sense of humor pays homage to the stylish, self-aware cartoons of the late ’90s, with the new game opting for a distinctive hand-animated style to capture the exaggerated morph attacks and comic timing of the ’Toads.”

If Rare’s idiosyncratic sense of humour is captured, this could be a fun experience. It certainly looks the part.

If you want to explore some of the history of the franchise, you can play the NES original and Battletoads Arcade as part of the excellent Rare Replay collection.

Xbox Game Pass members can pre-install the new game on console or PC from today. Here’s the new Battletoads trailer to tide you over.

We have a favour to ask

Thumbsticks has a couple of main aims. We want to write interesting articles and cover games that most outlets won't, and we want to give opportunities to new writers and new voices. And right now, with the current state of online publishing? It's tough! We hate to ask, but if you want us to continue writing what others won't, or to keep covering weird indie games, or to be able to give opportunities to new writers – and only if you can afford it – then please consider supporting us on Patreon.
