Just take a Minit.
Many of the best games of the last few years have been indies, and Epic wants you to play them. Ahem, Epic wants you to play them *on its launcher.* But, for the cost of free — as Celeste, Inside Abzu, The End is Nigh, Hyper Light Drifter and more have been lately — who are you to argue?
Minit, from developers JW, Kitty, Jukio, and Dom, is the latest enticement. The game’s name comes from its core gameplay loop: explore a world in one-minute, looping sprints. When 60 seconds is up, the world resets, but you get to hold onto any items you unlocked in the process. It’s like if Nintendo had given Majora’s Mask the 2D Zelda treatment, and dressed it down with a one-bit, black-and-white aesthetic.
Our own Josh Wise didn’t love Minit, but its soundtrack unquestionably rips.
With Minit going free, Epic has revealed that its next free game will be Surviving Mars. From developer Haemimont Games, Surviving Mars is a sci-fi city builder that tasks the player with managing a colony on the Red Planet.
