SNES classic Donkey Kong Country is one of three new games coming to Nintendo Switch Online this month.

It’s been a while since the last batch of games were added to the library of NES and SNES classics on Nintendo Switch. There’s still no sign of Earthbound – much to the chagrin of one Thumbsticks contributor – but three new games have been confirmed for release on July 15, 2020.

The headline act is Rare’s 1994 SNES classic, Donkey Kong Country. The bold and colourful platformer was once a trailblazer of graphics tech, achieving its distinctive visuals by transforming 3D models into sprites. It looks a little rough around the edges today, but it’s still a rollicking game with an all-time great soundtrack from David Wise.

Next up is Natsume Championship Wrestling, a well-liked SNES grappler from 1994. It’s not a game we’ve played before, but its bold visuals are appealing, and we look forward to giving the multiplayer mode a bash.

The final addition is the 1990 NES game, The Immortal, a fantasy isometric adventure that was considered to be quite violent in its day. We’re pleased to a see an EA-published title make it to Nintendo Switch Online. Hopefully it will pave the way for more of the publisher’s games, such as the beloved SNES version of Sim City.
