The Nintendo Switch is this generation’s fastest-selling video game system, according to The NPD Group.
Recently released data from The NPD Group – the US-based analytics firm that tracks video game and console sales – confirms that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 8.7 million units in the US between its launch in March 2017, and November 2018.
The rate of sales puts the Switch ahead of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U at the same point in their life cycles.
Nintendo expects the Switch will continue to sell well throughout December, citing the success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game has become the fastest selling Switch title to date with US sales of over 3 million units. It’s also the fast selling title in the long-running mascot fighting franchise.
Senior vice president of sales and marketing, the wonderfully named, Doug Bowser, said in a press statement:
“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch. We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”
Enjoy those smiles, kids.
Nintendo has also released glut of other US-specific sales numbers for 2018. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the evergreen Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, continue to do well, selling over four million and five million units, respectively. Super Mario Odyssey has also sold over 4.7 million units.
Three recently released Switch games are also off to a good start with Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! shifting a combined 2 million units since launch, and Super Mario Party selling 1.4 million copies. Nintendo also says that digital game sales via the eShop have grown 105% over 2017.
