Like remakes? Like remakes of remakes? Get ready for Star Ocean: First Departure R.

Square Enix has announced in a tweet that intergalactic JRPG, Star Ocean: First Departure R, will be coming to Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4.

The game is likely to be an HD reissue of the 2008 PlayStation Portable game, Star Ocean: First Departure, which was itself a remake of the first entry in the franchise.

Developed by tri-Ace for the Super NES in 1996, the original Star Ocean was only released in Japan, and notable for using a special S-DD1 chip to compress the game’s graphics and map data. The PSP remake followed 12 years later and included additional content from developer, TOSE. It’s not known which studio is working on the new Switch and PS4 versions.

The most recent games in the series are Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, which was released on PS4 and PS3 in 2016, and Star Ocean: Anamnesis, which is available now on iOS and Android.

At the time of writing there’s no confirmation on a release date for First Departure R. There’s also no news on a release of PC or Xbox One.

We’ll keep our eyes to the skies and update you with more information as and when we receive it.
