Final Fantasy XIV Online passes another milestone ahead of the release of its next expansion.

During the latest Letter from the Producer live stream, Final Fantasy XIV Online director, Naoki Yoshida, has updated players on the progress and future of Square Enix’s popular MMORPG.

The good news is that six years after release the game is still going strong. It recently surpassed 16 million registered users, an impressive year-on-year increase of over two million players.

The news comes as the game prepares for its third major expansion, Shadowbringers. In the live stream, Yoshida detailed the changes the expansion will introduce to the game’s battle and FATE systems, and revealed more about the new ‘charged action system’.

In addition to shadows, the expansion will also bring a rebalancing of the job system, some UI updates, and various quality of life changes.

The Shadowbringers benchmark software is also now available to download. It includes a full character creator that lets players create and view playable avatars – including the new Hrothgar and Viera races – which can be carried over to the full game.
