Two more NES games are now available on Switch as part of Nintendo Switch Online.

Subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online can today download to more classic NES games, plus SP updates for two previously released titles.

First up is action platformer Kid Icarus, which debuted on the Family Computer Disk System – where it was known as Light Mythology: Palutena’s Mirror – in 1986, before coming to the NES a year later. It’s certainly not an easy game, but is full of neat little touches and Nintendo R&D1’s talent shines through. One to persevere with.

Also released this month is StarTropics, the 1990 action adventure game developed by Genyo Takeda and Nintendo R&D3. Curiously, StarTropics was specifically designed for western audiences, and never received an official Japanese retail release.

For that reason if you have access to the Japanese Famcicom game library on Switch, you’ll find that Kid Icarus is joined by Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, and classic fighter, Yie Ar Kung-Fu.

This month’s SP updates include a most welcome boost for players of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Attack, Magic, and Life at are all maxed out at Level 8 when you start the game. And the SP update for Kirby’s Adventure unlocks the tricky Extra Game! mode.

We have a favour to ask

Thumbsticks has a couple of main aims. We want to write interesting articles and cover games that most outlets won't, and we want to give opportunities to new writers and new voices. And right now, with the current state of online publishing? It's tough! We hate to ask, but if you want us to continue writing what others won't, or to keep covering weird indie games, or to be able to give opportunities to new writers – and only if you can afford it – then please consider supporting us on Patreon.
