The Pokémon Company has confirmed the venue and dates for the 2020 Pokémon World Championships.

Mark your calendar, this year’s Pokémon World Championships will be held from August 14-16, 2020 at the ExCeL in London. It’s the first time the event has been held outside of North America.

The championships will bring together the world’s best Pokémon Trading Card Game and video game players, plus thousands of fans, for three days of intense battling. There will also be side tournaments and other activities to keep attendees and spectators occupied.

Tournament participants can attend for free, but there will be a ’nominal fee’ for spectators. More details are expected soon. If you want to take part, the first step on your journey is to compete in a local Pokémon tournament. Head over to the Event Locator on the official website to find your nearest event. Read more about the World Championships qualifying criteria here.

There’s also great news for those that like to wait in line. The 2020 World Championships will also be home to a Pokémon Center store that will stock a slew of themed merchandise. Let’s hope it’s better stocked than the recent London pop-up store.

We have a favour to ask

Thumbsticks has a couple of main aims. We want to write interesting articles and cover games that most outlets won't, and we want to give opportunities to new writers and new voices. And right now, with the current state of online publishing? It's tough! We hate to ask, but if you want us to continue writing what others won't, or to keep covering weird indie games, or to be able to give opportunities to new writers – and only if you can afford it – then please consider supporting us on Patreon.
