The Xbox Games with Gold lineup for August 2021 includes an underrated sequel and a flawed but fun homage to the past.
We’re usually pretty down on Xbox Games with Gold. The reason is obvious, of course. The reason is Xbox Game Pass.
Nonetheless, the Xbox Games with Gold for August are actually quite good. Topping the list is Darksiders III, the overlooked action role-playing sequel from Gunfire Games. It’s no classic, but it does continue the franchise with a rough-edged charm that should satisfy players of the first two games.
Yooka-Laylee, meanwhile, is a Banjo-Kazooie sequel in all but name. This deliberate attempt to recreate the magic of early 3D platformers is also flawed but it us absolutely worth playing if you like colourful, low-stakes adventuring.
Rounding out August’s free game is Neo Geo fighting classic Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Capcom’s forgotten – but again enjoyable – third-person shooter, Lost Planet 3.

Of July’s free games, Planet Alpha and Midway Arcade Origins are available until the end of the month. Rock of Ages 3 is available until August 15.
